Are your seedlings organic?
Highland Seedlings is not Organically Certified although we do follow organic principles for growing. Some of our seeds are organic, and we use commercial peat-free compost that is not currently certified organic as well as our own compost. We do not use any chemical sprays or fertilisers. We follow the 4 Organic Principles:
- Principle of Health. Healthy soil, plants, animals, humans = a healthy planet.
- Principle of Ecology. Emulating and sustaining natural systems.
- Principle of Fairness. Equity, respect and justice for all living things.
- Principle of Care. For the generations to come.
What kinds of seeds to you use?
We use a variety of open-pollinated, F1 and Heritage seeds, depending on the variety. All varieties we sell have been tried and tested in our own garden. We generally try to keep costs down to allow as many people as possible to grow our seedlings. Some of our seeds are saved by us, some are from Real Seeds and SowSeeds, and some are from Lidl.
Why don't you always specify the variety on the product listings?
We often grow different varieties throughout the year and have decided to take a simple approach for our shop. Please let us know if you would like to know more about the varieties we have at any given moment, and also if you would like us to grow a particular variety. The varieties we grow are all ones that have worked well in our own garden in the past. For example, we grow different round red radishes throughout the year, and you may be sent different varieties depending on when you place your order. We have found that the vast majority of our growers don't mind what kind of radish they get as long as it's red, round and tastes good, so we just list them all as Radish (red).
How do you package your seedlings?
Our seedlings are wrapped in newspaper and placed inside a reused cardboard box. They do not come in plastic pots, and a little bit of loose soil is included inside the newspaper wrapper. There will either be plant labels included in each wrapped seedling, or information about the content will be written on it in sharpie. We are currently using plastic tape to secure our cardboard boxes, but we are hoping to change to paper tape once we have run out of the current batch. It is normal for your seedlings to look a little limp and possible a bit squished due to travel, but please don't worry about this - they will perk up soon when you have potted them up.
What do I do when my plants arrive?
Please unwrap your box as soon as you receive it, and carefully check each little wrapped seedling for damange. Pot up each seedling or clump of seedlings as soon as you can, either in their final position or in a pot if you want to grow them on first. All seedlings can be planted in their final position when they arrive. If you can't plant your seedlings immediately place them in a shallow glass/pot of water until you can, but please don't wait longer than 24 hours.
My plants have arrived damaged
We are so sorry! We package everything carefully to ensure minimum disturbance to the roots and leaves in transit, but unfortunately accidents happen sometime. If there is any damage, please take a picture and email it to us along with a description of the problem on [email protected]. We will be in touch as soon as we can, and send you replacement seedlings if appropriate.
Do you ship seedlings outwith the UK?
No, we only ship within the UK.
What courier do you use?
We ship our seedlings with Royal Mail as we have had problems with other couriers in the past. Most seedlings are sent as a 'small parcel', though some boxes are sent as a 'medium parcel'. Most orders of individual seedlings fit within the 'small parcel' category. Our delivery charge for these is £4 - £3.55 postage, and 45p packaging/taking things to the post office by car. The larger boxes come with free delivery. There are no surcharges to any UK postcodes.
Can I pick up my order in person?
Yes - we will email you to arrange that when you select 'local pickup' at checkout.
How long will my seedlings take to arrive?
At present all products listed on our website are ready to despatch within 5 days. We post orders Mon-Wed, so anything ordered Thu-Sun will be posted the following Monday. This is to ensure that no packages get held up in sorting offices over the weekend. Our seedlings are sent first class and normally arrive within 48 hours of posting. You will receive an email confirmation once your order has been posted.
Can you help me pick seedlings for my new garden/windowsill/etc?
Yes! We are always very happy to help - just email us on [email protected] (or chat to us on instagram @highlandseedlings or twitter @highlandseeds). We'll gladly put together a seedling package that fits your space and taste, or you can order one of our 'Kitchen Garden' boxes.
Can I pre-order seedlings for later on in the season, or for next year?
We don't currently have a section on the website that allows you to do this, but please just get in touch by email on [email protected] to discuss pre-orders. We're always happy to grow things for you, and can usually give you an estimated week for when pre-ordered seedlings will be ready to despatch.
